The field of education seems to have almost as many acronyms as the military. It can be pretty confusing trying to sort your way through these collections of letters that sometimes spell words. You may have come across the acronym, “STEM”. It has nothing to do with plants, although it does include botany. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

STEM Is a Learning Discipline

As a college student, you may take classes in one of these fields, but STEM combines them into a learning philosophy where all four areas are integrated into one program. As you can imagine, it is very difficult and a student might find themself needing a STEM book index for a little help. A STEM degree is more valuable than one in any of the individual fields and makes a graduate an attractive candidate in the job market.

STEM Is a Different Method of Education

The STEM philosophy introduces students to a whole new way of learning. They must use methods from all of the component subjects to solve complex problems. It does away with traditional methods of learning such as memorization and the application of formulas. Using the STEM methodology requires creativity, flexibility, and original thinking. Those with purely analytical minds generally find it difficult. Rather than look to professors to learn how to think about and solve a problem, good STEM students learn to use their own thoughts and ideas to apply methods from any or all of the disciplines involved to create their own unique solutions. They are extremely tough programs but the rewards are well worth the effort.

STEM is a new method to teach technical subjects to students. It leads to creative individuals capable of independent analysis of problems and the ability to use what they know to find new solutions.
